Reviewed 17 September 2026 against Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) guidance updated 7 September 2026. This explains a Dubai-registered vehicle sale. Requirements in other emirates or special cases can differ; check the relevant authority before paying or handing over a vehicle.

Selling a car involves more than receiving payment. The seller and buyer need to complete the official ownership-change process so the vehicle is registered to the correct person. Dubai RTA offers an Apply for Changing a Vehicle Ownership service through online and in-person channels. Use its live service page for the current requirements and fees.

Before agreeing to the sale

  1. Check the vehicle’s registration and finance status. RTA lists an electronic mortgage release where applicable. If the car is financed, speak to the lender about settlement and release before promising a transfer date.
  2. Check traffic fines and other blockers. RTA instructs sellers to pay relevant fines and lists fines from Dubai and other emirates. Review the vehicle and traffic-file position in the official service before the transaction.
  3. Agree on price and handover terms. Record what is included, when payment will be confirmed, and when the car, keys and plates will be handed over. Do not rely on a verbal agreement when there is a dispute risk.

Documents and conditions for a typical Dubai transfer

RTA’s current service requirements list valid Emirates IDs for buyer and seller, electronic insurance, electronic technical inspection and electronic mortgage release if applicable. Additional documents can apply to residents without a traffic file, companies, diplomatic vehicles and representatives. A person acting for the seller needs the authority RTA specifies. Check the exact RTA requirements for your case before visiting or starting online.

Do not assume an inspection is required only after a fixed vehicle age. RTA’s service page lists electronic technical inspection as a requirement for the ownership-change journey, while the exact path depends on the vehicle and registration case.

How the Dubai RTA process works

For an online route described by RTA, the seller identifies the vehicle, settles applicable fines and enters buyer details. Buyer and seller sign the Sale and Purchase Agreement electronically, and the buyer pays applicable fees. Plate return or reservation depends on the chosen route. The buyer then completes registration at a service centre, including any required inspection and insurance steps. RTA also lists customer centres and vehicle registration and inspection centres as channels. The parties do not always have to begin by visiting a centre together.

RTA says its online Sale and Purchase Agreement is valid for 14 days. Complete the follow-up registration within the required period. Keep the official agreement, payment proof, and ownership confirmation. Hand over the car only when the agreed payment and official transfer steps are confirmed.

Fees: check the live service before quoting a total

RTA currently lists AED 50 for the Sale and Purchase Agreement and AED 20 for Knowledge and Innovation on the ownership-change service page. The full payable amount can depend on vehicle category, registration, plates, inspection and the chosen transaction. This article does not quote a single total or claim the buyer always pays every fee. Use RTA’s live fee table for your transaction.

After transfer

Confirm that the vehicle no longer appears under the seller’s ownership and that the buyer has completed registration. Contact the insurer about the seller’s policy and any possible refund; policy terms vary. Remove personal belongings and data from the vehicle, and keep copies of the sale documents and relevant receipts.

Other emirates and special cases

Dubai RTA’s online agreement is for Dubai. If the vehicle is registered in another emirate, or the buyer will register it elsewhere, verify the steps with the responsible registration authority. Mortgaged cars, company-owned vehicles, absent owners, expired registration and special plates can require extra actions. Avoid relying on a generic checklist for these cases.

Get a valuation before setting your price

To understand your selling options, request a free Carzoo valuation. The form gathers vehicle details and a preferred date; the team then reviews them. A final offer depends on inspection. For ownership-transfer requirements, use the official Dubai RTA service page.
