A budget car is the one you can afford to buy, insure, maintain and eventually resell—not simply the car with the lowest advertised price. For an expat whose stay may change, the exit cost matters as much as the purchase cost. Use this guide to build a shortlist, then compare quotes for the exact trim and vehicle condition.

These are examples, not a claim that one model is best for every driver. The official page price is a starting point, not the final amount you will pay. Ask dealers for written quotes with registration, delivery, finance charges and optional products separated. Do not compare a base trim with a heavily optioned rival.
New or used: calculate the full cost
New can provide a clear warranty and known initial condition, but compare depreciation and finance cost. Used can lower the entry price, but set aside money for inspection, tyres, battery, brakes and possible repairs. Ask for service records, accident and repainting history, and a professional inspection. A cheap vehicle with major repair needs can cost more over your ownership period.
For any candidate, add purchase price, insurance, registration, expected fuel, servicing, tyres, parking and financing over the time you expect to own it. Subtract a cautious resale estimate, using comparable cars of the same year, trim, mileage and condition. This gives a more useful comparison than an unsupported “low maintenance” label.
Choose for your actual stay and driving
- Short or uncertain stay: Consider how easy the car would be to sell and whether a finance contract has early-settlement costs.
- Long commute: Compare the manufacturer’s fuel or electricity figures for the exact trim, then allow for real-world traffic and air conditioning.
- Family or frequent inter-emirate trips: Check luggage space, seating and comfort in person. A smaller car may save money but may not fit the job.
- Used-car purchase: Ask for a condition report and compare at least two insurance quotes before committing.
